“American Idol” semi-finals are here! And as an “Idol” fanatic and live-blogger I couldn’t be happier. This is the time we learn what the contestants are all about separate from the producers grubby hands manipulating their audition backstories.

I assume A-Rod will start the news conference with an opening statement in which he will reiterate his sorrow and embarrassment for being caught up in baseball’s ‘loosey-goosey’ steroid environment etc. What I wonder though is if A-Rod or his people will attempt to place any restrictions on questions. If they’re smart they won’t because that would not set a good tone to what likely could be the most career-defining news conference for the guy commonly referred to as the best player in baseball today. I also wonder if A-Rod will admit to taking steroids. If you notice in the ESPN interview he was careful to say he took a “banned substance.

Blogging live at halftime in Charlottesville. Hoos lead the Hokies 39-37 thanks to a 10-0 run to end the half. Virginia held Virginia Tech without a field goal in the final 4:57. Lethargic doesn’t begin to describe the Hokies right now. Point guard Malcolm Delaney has five points and four turnovers.

Because my knowledge of Big Easy cuisine is limited to five words from Hank Williams — “jambalaya crawfish pie file’ gumbo” — I’m sure to learn something new during tonight’s installment (which starts at 10 Eastern). In fact I learn something new here every week which is one of many reasons I’ll sorely miss this season when it’s over. Last week for example I learned what many commenters would choose as their last meal on earth thanks to Lizawithazee’s impromptu poll on the topic.
